Chicago Pictures / July, 2006

Our business took us to downtown Chicago. One of the famous structures is the Water Tower, which survived the great fire in 1871:

After checking into the hotel, we visited Milennium Park. Here is the famous "Cloudgate" sculpture:

The Crown Fountain is a delight to watch, and kids love splashing in the water on a hot July day:

Northwestern University owns a hotel called Worcester House. Families of patients of Northwestern Memorial Hospital are among those eligible for lodging at this facility. In the photo below, Worcester House is the building that appears behind the traffic light:

Between appointments, we took a short walk to the John Hancock Building, and visited its 94th floor observation deck. This picture of the view to the North shows how close we were to Lake Michigan:

Here is the view to the Southeast. The Navy Pier amusement park occupies the pier next to the water treatment plant.Worcester House at the bottom of the picture:

This is the view to the South. Northwestern Memorial Hospital can be seen at the center of the photo. The tower with a gray vertical center strip is the Feinberg Pavilion of the hospital. Across the street, to the north, one can see the roof of the parking garage:

Chicago stretches far to the west, unimpeded by geographic barriers. The former Montgomer Ward headquarters buildings can be seen in the center-left part of the picture. Look for the white tower with a dark strip that runs down the center, and the shorter but very wide building across the street from the tower. The notorious Cabrini Green public housing project is a little to the right and below of the shorter Wards building:

One sad note to our visit to Chicago -- we came upon the scene of a terrible accident. Apparently, something happened down in a tunnel or underground parking garage that resulted in hurling a car right through the sidewalk in front of the Contemporary Art Museum:
